Vadakkunnathan Temple stands on a gentle rise in the very centre of Thrissur, and the city has grown up in a ring around it. The road that circles its walls is known simply as the Round, and the open ground beside the walls, Thekkinkadu Maidan, is where the famous Thrissur Pooram is held every year.
Shiva is worshipped here as Vadakkunnathan, the Lord of the North. Devotees cannot see the linga itself: it lies beneath a tall mound of ghee, built up over centuries of daily abhishekam. Inside the high stone walls are shrines of Parvati, Sankaranarayana, Sree Rama and Ganapathi, a koothambalam where Koothu and Koodiyattam are staged, and murals and wood carvings that make this one of the finest surviving examples of old Kerala temple architecture.
The story goes that after Parasurama raised the land of Kerala from the sea, he went to Kailasa and asked his teacher Shiva to come and bless the new land. Shiva set out with Parvati, Ganapathi, Subrahmanya and his attendants, and rested at the place that is now Thrissur. When the divine company vanished, Parasurama found a radiant linga at the foot of a huge banyan tree. That first spot, the Sreemoolasthanam, is still honoured today.
Later, the legend continues, a ruler of Kochi decided to move the linga into a proper temple. The banyan had to be cut, and everyone feared that a falling branch would damage the linga. The Yogatirippadu of the time lay over it to shield it, and devotees say not a single splinter fell near it. It is also believed that the parents of Adi Shankaracharya prayed here for a child, and there is a shrine to Shankaracharya inside the temple.
Nobody knows for certain when the temple was first built. What stands today – the nine-acre walled compound, the four gopurams, the koothambalam and the murals from the Mahabharata – is a treasured example of Kerala temple building. In the late eighteenth century Sakthan Thampuran, the ruler of Kochi who made Thrissur his capital, brought the deities of the neighbouring temples together for the Thrissur Pooram on the grounds around Vadakkunnathan. The temple is a protected national monument; its conservation, carried out with traditional methods and materials, received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific award for cultural heritage conservation in 2015. It is administered by the Cochin Devaswom Board.

Traditional, modest dress is expected. Men usually wear a mundu and take off shirts and vests before going into the inner temple; women wear a saree, set-mundu, a long skirt with blouse, or churidar. Follow the temple's current notices at the gopuram, as rules can change.
Visitors go in through the east and west gopurams; the other two towers are not used by the public. By temple custom and the entry rules followed in Kerala's Devaswom temples, the inner temple is open to Hindus, while everyone can walk the Round and Thekkinkadu Maidan outside. Leave footwear outside and ask before taking photographs – photography inside is usually restricted. Follow the temple's current notices.
Early morning, soon after the nada opens, is the calmest time. Maha Shivaratri and the Aanayoottu day bring very large crowds, and during Thrissur Pooram the whole area around the temple is packed – a wonderful sight, but expect very slow movement and road closures.
Paramekkavu Bhagavathy Temple – right beside the eastern side of the grounds; one of the two main Pooram temples.
Thiruvambady Sree Krishna Temple – about 1 km away; the other main Pooram temple.
Shakthan Thampuran Palace – the old palace of the Kochi rulers, now a museum, about 1 km away.
Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple – about 30 km to the north-west.
